Work sucks. Everyone knows that. But according to a survey of 1,600 workers conducted by the NPR, some jobs are worse than others. Much worse, and are in fact damaging to your health be it physically dangerous, or mentally, as they cause too much stress. So cue the fear-mongering music … here are the worst jobs you should absolutely steer clear from:
With a broken education system and kids more distracted than ever, many of which suffer from ADHD – we’re not surprised to see this one on the list. Being a teacher was once a very rewarding and cushy job – but now – stressful, tiring, and not to mention, underpaid.
Desk Job 13%
With everything we know about biology, it’s safe to say that human beings were not meant to sit at a desk all day long. Add to that the pressures of the private sector in this tough economy, with workers being expected to work more for less – it’s no wonder this job made the list.
Just like their desk jockey counterparts, many restaurant staff is expected to do more for less. Also, the restaurant business is more competitive than ever. And when competition is high – so are stress levels.
Every year over 30,000 warehouse workers are seriously injured or killed because of heavy objects from above falling on them.
Store Owner 16%
For many, just being an entrepreneur is living the American Dream. But for those that own brick and mortar shops – in this economy – many are killing themselves just to make a dollar. With less loans being lent out, crushing competition from big box stores, never mind all the competition from cheap labor overseas – your typical store owner is dying a slow death due to too much stress.
Many know of the odd fact that dentists have one of the highest suicide rates of any profession. Well they’re no longer alone as many other medical professionals are joining them on the ledge. Why? One theory suggests that the exponentially growing population in combination with a lack of hospitals being built to keep up is a major source.
Factory Worker 21%
Same as the poor warehouse worker, too many factory workers are severely injured or crushed to death by heavy machinery.
Of all the labor jobs, being a construction worker is by far the most dangerous. It’s estimated that close to 150,000 construction workers each year are permanently disabled due to injury, and in 2015, 25,000 died on the job.
Retail Outlet 26%
Now this is surprising, of all the jobs out there that send people to the hospital because of cardiovascular problems, those that work retail are at the top of the list. Perhaps it’s the mass of increasingly rude customers, or, the realization that working retail is a dead-end job – either way, if you work at a store, you’re in for some serious health problems. Quit while you can.
