Do you know that in most 3rd world countries, life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, many forms of cancer, and Crohn’s disease are unheard of. Why? Because they still primarily eat the way we did for most of human evolution – a natural, healthy, and balanced diet. But here in the west our modern diet, characterized by refined sugars, saturated fats, too little fiber and way too much red meat is slowly killing us.
Skyrocketing Sugar Intake
Here in the west we consume a disgusting, and quite dangerous amount of refined sugar. According to the chart, the average person consumes about 150 pounds of sugar a year, which amounts to well over 500 calories of refined sugar each day!
Gross Amounts Of Soda
Of all the sources of sugar we consume, soda pop makes up the bulk of it. And don’t think fruit juices are any better either, as they often contain just as much, if not more refined sugars.
Massive Gain In Calorie Intake
It’s rather ironic that bellbottoms were in in the 70’s rather than now, because now more than ever, we need bigger pants as our calorie intake has skyrocketed by 425 per day!
Abandoning Of Traditional Fats
One of the big mistakes health professionals made back in the 50’s was to start blaming saturated fat – like the one’s found in butter, lard, and coconut oil – for heart disease. This made people switch to processed vegetable oils, which are too high in Omega-6 fatty acids that cause inflammation and other various health problems.
Replacing Butter With Margarine
Here’s another chart showing the “war” on saturated (natural) fats. This error by medical professionals in the 50’s deprived people of the many nutrients found in grass-fed butter (such as Vitamin K2), which protects against heart disease, and instead, forced everyone to switch to trans-fat ridden margarine, which causes heart disease.
Modern Wheat Sucks…
… the nutrients out of our diets that older varieties of wheat used to give us. For example, today’s wheat has 20-30% less Magnesium, Iron, Copper, and Zinc – all of which are important for building strong bones, strong immune systems, and healthy bodies – as opposed to the wheat our grandparents grew up with.
Eggs Consumption Down
It’s a well documented fact that eggs are a super food, as they are one of the most nutrient rich foods you can eat. But because back in the 90’s there was a war on cholesterol (which eggs are high in), we started to cut back (a 33% reduction since 1950), leading to a deficiency in Choline – which a lack of puts you at risk for liver disease, even liver failure.
Processing Processed Foods
This graph shows just how much exponentially more fast food (processed foods) we’re consuming in recent decades. What it doesn’t show however, is that while most still eat at home, it doesn’t take into account that the foods we eat at home are now more processed than ever.
Shitty Fatty Acid Composition
Perhaps the scariest chart of all, is this one here showing our linoleic acid intake (an Omega-6 fatty acid found in vegetable oils). And what’s so scary about this is that this kind of fatty acid actually bakes itself into our cell membranes and body fat stores – and because they fats are known to oxidize, which destroys DNA molecules – we’re greatly increasing our rates of cancer.
1977 was the first time dietary guidelines were published for Americans. Coincidentally – and rather ironically – it was at that exact same time when the obesity epidemic started.
